From passion to profession
Ever since I can remember, I’ve had a passionate bond with dogs. As a child, I was enthralled by dogs, always pining over other people’s and bringing strays home to my parents all nights of the week. At that time my family and I lived in a small apartment, and naturally, my parents declined my requests to make any one of those pups a permanent fixture in our home.
Acknowledging my innate love for canines, my parents promised me a dog when they bought a house. That day finally came in 1967 when Terry, the all-black German Shepherd came into my life. He was an incredible dog and I loved him dearly, however, I was a young boy with all kinds of interests outside the home and much of the work to care for Terry fell on my parents. The day came when they refused to do it any longer. Terry was given away to another family and there was nothing I could do about it. My heart broke into a million pieces for the loss of my dog and it’s a feeling I’ve never forgotten. It’s this very point in time that instilled a fear of loss in me that I’ve never quite been able to shake.

How Far We've Come
Many years later in my 20s, I was dog-sitting for a close friend of mine when it hit me: the one thing missing in my life was a dog of my own. I bought myself a German Shepherd and called him Bax. When I became a dog owner, I realized that I wanted more than a companion. I wanted trust, connection, obedience and purpose. This began my extensive research into sporting dogs and military training, and I found a professional who trained dogs for law enforcement. I spent much of my young adult life at his sanctuary, learning the art of dog training without using e-collars, food or toys for bribery — focusing instead on trust and real connection. From that moment, I knew this was my life’s mission.
In 1998, I took everything I knew and translated that expertise into a niche market: All about CCPD and selling trained protection dogs for families and individuals. I wanted to train dogs to protect but also to be social and companionship dogs – the best of both worlds for people who want a dog to be part of their family and wish to close the security loop on their personal protection.
Running a business where I get to work intimately with dogs and train them to become the highly skilled, protective, valiant animals they can be is one of the greatest joys of my life. What I love most about my work are the results I’m privileged see: the end-to-end transformation of an average dog into an expert-trained personal protection dog, followed by the thoughtful placement of that dog into a loving, carefully selected family for a lifetime of safety, trust and companionship.
Command Control Protection Dogs (CCPD) was founded 28 years ago and there hasn’t been a single day that I’ve looked back. I love what I do and I’ve built a team of people around me who are just as passionate about this work as I am. We have a keen eye for the dominant puppies in every litter who are built for this role and we start their training as young as five weeks of age. They are thoroughly socialized, deeply loved and built to be environmentally strong.
