Our training approach incorporates various types of collars and leads, each serving a distinct purpose in the dog’s development. We abstain from using electronic collars, commonly known as “e-collars” or shock collars.
We believe these devices are unnecessary and can be harmful, especially when trainers lack proper training techniques. It’s not uncommon to see trainers using remote controls for shock collars, indicating a reliance on these devices due to inadequate foundational training.
All our trained dogs achieve off-leash obedience, responding to commands as effectively as they would on a leash. This level of discipline begins with on-leash training, progressing to off-leash as the dog masters commands. A unique tool we use is a 7-foot lead with brass double snaps and a floating ring, designed for structured walks.
Standard leads found in pet stores are typically 4 to 6 feet long, which can limit control. Counterintuitively, a longer lead allows for better control, as holding the leash in a loose, U-shape reduces stress and tension.
Dogs sense their handler’s cues; a tight leash can convey anxiety, leading the dog to become overly defensive. Given our dogs’ off-leash obedience, the longer lead facilitates clear communication between handler and dog.
For police or military dog training, we utilize a 3-foot police lead with a handle. This shorter lead provides the necessary control in high-pressure situations, allowing officers to manage the dog with their left hand while keeping their right hand free for other tasks.
In home environments, a small pull tab proves invaluable. This ultra-light accessory functions like a mini lead, enabling trainers to correct the dog without the impracticality of a full-sized lead indoors. Since our protection dogs are trained in home settings, the pull tab becomes an essential tool for effective training.
